Living in rural mid-Wales I enjoy my monthly trips to Bath, where my sister lives. On my own at lunchtime in the city centre I tried the Green Tree which is in many good beer guides and found it fusty, dusty, reactionary and generally unpleasant. Wandering discontentedly I asked a local for a decent city centre pub and was pointed to The Salamander. I found it. Good beer, bright atmosphere, roomy, good food, newspapers to read and generally unselfconsciously convivial. It is a good pub.
