The Sidey has changed a lot in the past five years, resulting in a pub that you can never quite feel at home in. For a crawl – it is fine, you’re in – you’re out and the two beer gardens are large, one is covered and they have good table surface, in the summer – it’s all good. But for a normal drink, it’s really quite a different story. Being where it is (opposite the high rises in Kemptown), it is patronised by those looking for cheaper beer and so, the managers of The Sidey added a Happy Hour, lasting from 4pm to 8pm, with ridiculous prices on lager, Strongbow and John Smiths. Thus the main table space opposite the bar in the pub is always populated by the worst possible drinker – the drunk. It’s a shame, as the pub used to be well known as being a particularly good young place to be – very trendy with DJs and other entertainment, but now, it’s succumbed to the lowest common denominator.
