The Welli has recently changed hands. Previously a dedicated rugby (and to a lesser extent football) pub, the bar was split over two sides (for the two sports) and on match days, Ian used to cook up a massive vat of chilli for people to pay £1 for a bowl – it worked rather well. Now, under new ownership, the pub has become gay-friendly and has removed the back bar for a proper kitchen. The Welli has gone gastro. However, that said, the front bar is still a nice, chilled place to relax and drink. Good beers, no nonsense and comfy seats, recently done up. It has a real fire and the food is actually of a high standard. If you haven’t yet tried it, go and have a look.
